Alice in wonderland

Let me start by saying I have not seem this new version yet. I was just shocked to recently learn that Johnny Depp was the mad hatter. I knew he was in the movie but alway saw this picture and assumed Elijah Wood was playing that role. There are some strong similarities are there not?
